ARSENAL 0 CHELSEA 2: PLAYERS RATING AND LESSONS

Arsenal were knocked out of the Capital One cup on Tuesday night by perennial rivals, Chelsea. Wenger made 8 changes tot he team that won at Crystal Palace, only Carzola, Ramsey and Koscienly were starters at Selhurst Park. Here are Gooner of Steel player ratings:

Fabianski: did not make any save of note and was not to blame for both goals, but I feel that he should have come out earlier in the build up to the first goal. 5.5

Jenskinson: He must have eaten what Joe Hart and Nastasic had. Was majorly to blame for the first goal and did not have a good game. One of his worst performances in the Arsenal shirt 4

Vermaelen: made some good tackles and was generally solid. Lucky not be sent off in the dying minutes of the game. Good to see the captain back. 6

Koscienly: strong performance, made some crucial interceptions and was solid too. 6.5

Monreal: really put in  a good shift. Almost got to on the sscoresheet 6.5

Wilshere: had a decent game, made his characteristic penetrating runs. He seems to be getting to his best. 6

Ramsey: was Arsenal’s main goal threat during the first half. found a good midfield partnership in midfield. 6.5

Rosicky: was his usual buzzing self, but did not make any impact of note. Put in a decent show though 6

Carzola: had a decent game, at least better than the Palace game. Seems to be getting his groove back 6.5

Bendtner: the prodigal son still has a long way to go before he appeases gooners and with that performance yesterday, he has not started at all. 5

Ryo: an undoubtedly talented player. However, seemed timid in the game and did not make any impact of note. Must improve if he is to have a future in the Emirates. 5

FACTS AND LESSONS

In gooner of steel fashion, we take a look at some of the facts and lessons from the Capital One cup loss.

1. BEST LEFT BACKS IN THE LAND

A lot of stories have been made of how good the midfield is, its competitiveness and flexibility; but I also think that we have two of the best left backs in Europe. no other team has two left backs of the highest quality in the same team and that both deserve to start. After Monreal’s impressive showing against Chelsea, I have confidence in that position even if Gibbs gets a knock.

2. JENKO. WHAT’S UP?

Jenkinson is one of the club’s famous British Core project and while the other members of the squad are making great improvements, I believe Carl is not making such strides. his performance against Chelsea was far from decent as I have seen better performances from him. He has to step up especially with the public pursuit of a new right back.

3. THE SAINT IS GETTING THERE

Gooners that have been critical of Santi Carzola should bear in mind that he had no form of pre-season whatsoever. He was barely fit when he was thrown into action, got an ankle injury and was out for a month. For me, that is enough excuse to not be in top form. However, against Chelsea I saw glimpses of the old Carzola and I believe he is making great progress to get back to his scintillating best.

4. FEAR OF THE EMIRATES

A hallmark of champions at any level is the team’s ability to do well at her home turf. Arsenal has a near perfect away record this season, but same cannot be said of our home record. We have lost to Villa, Dortmund and Chelsea and agonizingly they have all been at the Emirates. Our home form has to improve if we are to stand a chance of competing for laurels and we must do so now especially with the SAS gang and friends visiting on Saturday.

5. GOOD TO SEE PARK

Park Chu Young was one of the ‘frantic five’. Five desperate deadline day deals in the summer of 2011. While Mertesacker and Arteta have proved to be wise buys, Park and Santos have not be so sweet. Park came to England with a decent reputation, captain of Monaco in the french league, pretty good scoring record for both club and country and it has surely shocked many people that he has failed to shine in the Emirates. I was delighted to see him put on an arsenal shirt again, though I don’t see it happening anytime soon again.

The loss to Chelsea was painful, but we must pick ourselves up, show that we are made of Steel and prepare for another stern Liverpool test #coyg
