The past seven days have been massive for the club and they almost capped it with a win at Old Trafford. However, the Red Devils had other plans and they pipped Arsenal 1-0 courtesy of a Robin Van Persie header in the 27 minute.
Wenger had to tinker the team that started in Germany. Merteacker and Rosicky dropped out because of illness meaning that Flamini and Vermaelen made a return. The game started in frantic pace but United seemedthe hungrier of the 2 sides. Rooney went close on 10 minutes but the host were b=not to be denied on 27 minutes: a Rooney corner found Van Persie whose header beat Szczesny and went in despite efforts from Gibbs.
From there, United seemed to put more pressure on the gooners but could not get the goal instead it was Giroud that went close for the equalizer on 36 minutes.
On resumption of the second half, the gooners searched for the equalizer, Vermaelen, Ramsey and Ozil came close. After which it became a topsy-turvy affair,Gibbs, Rooney, Giroud. Smalling all got in the act. In the end, it was Manchester that celebrated, the gooners might have been at their best but it was another gallant performance
SZCZESNY: did not have much to do and was not to blame for the goal. Was his dominant self though in the box (6)
SAGNA:did well aerially and put in a coiple of god crosses that were not utilized (6.5)
VERMAELEN: late replacement for Mertesacker. Did not do too many bad things but did not do many good things either. good performance though (6)
KOSCIENLY: was his normal hard tackling self; won a lot of tackles and was great defensively (7)
GIBBS: another solid performance from the left back. Had a long range effort that was saved. Always made himself available and did pretty well against Valencia (6.5)
ARTETA: had another good game. Won many tackles and was solid (7)
FLAMINI: glad to see him back. Worked hard for the team and got his fair share of 60 minutes game time.(6)
CARZOLA: had a very quiet game by his standards. Surely need the international break for some re-organization (6)
OZIL: well marked by United. Came to life in the second half and surely had the best chance for the Gooners (6)
RAMSEY: did a lot of running as usual and also went close for the gooners. Had a below average first half display but did pretty well in the second (6)
GIROUD: had a diificult time against Evans and Jones. Seemed fatigued after a tough week though (6)
SUBS: GNABRY (5) BENDTNER (6) WILSHERE (6)
MAN OF THE MATCH: On the whole game, I thought Phil Jones was awesome and worked really hard. From the Arsenal perspective, Koscienly worked really hard today especially in the absence of defensive partner Mertesacker.
For me it was quite sad that we lost after an impressive week, but I appreciate the boys for a good shift. I don’t think you win the league at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge but at the stadia of the so called lesser teams.
Cheers to the gooners, after it was predicted to be a week of doom and gloom. They came out with a score of 2/3: a pass mark. #COYG
