ARE THESE SET OF YOUNG GOONERS LIKE THE SET OF 2009?

While we are preparing for the big game against Chelsea, I decided to take a look at some of my old gooner pictures and I stumbled upon this picture:

Image

That team annihilated Sheffield United so easily and effortlessly. It was like training for the teenage gooners. That team had some exceptional young gooners, they were tipped for great things especially that most of them had won the youth FA Cup the year before. However, it was not to be, out of the 11 players that started, only three (Gibbs, Ramsey and Wilshere) are key members of the present squad; 3 of them (Fabianski, Bendtner and Frimpong) are first team players. Coquelin is on loan to Freiburg while Song is a bench player in Barcelona.

The 2009 youth FA cup win had some very talented young players. Craig Eastmond, Kyle Bartley, Lansbury, Sanchez Watt and so on. Gooner of Steel looks at some of these super talented young stars that only ended as flashes in the palm, a mirage and where they are now.

KYLE BARTLEY

Very talented central defender. Had successful spells at Sheffield United and Rangers. Came back to Arsenal but could not get into the team; sold to Swansea and is presently with Birghimham on loan.

HENRI LANSBURY

One player I loved so much and actually thought he could be the English version of Vieira. Had his  high point when he scored that super goal against Tottenham but went into Oblivion. Went on loan spells to Scunthrope, Watford, Norwich and West Ham (helped them gain promotion). Presently with Nottingham Forest.

JAY EMMANUEL THOMAS

Captain of the Youth FA Cup winning team. Had loan spells at Blackpool, Doncaster, Cardiff, Ipswich. Presently with Bristol City.

SANCHEZ WATT

Fast and skillful wing forward. Had huge potential but was a flash in the palm. Had various loan spells with Southend, Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, and Crawley Town. Presently with Colchester United.

GAVIN HOYTE

Younger brother of another misfiring gooner (Justin). Was tipped to do better than his brother. Went for loan spells at Watford, Brighton, Lincoln City and Wimbledon. Presently with Dagenham & Red Bridge.

FRAN  MERIDA

Hugely talented fellow. Reached the finals of the U-17 World Cup in 2007 and played a handful of games for the first team. Still have fond memories of the goal that he scored against Bolton. He was loaned to Real Sociedad and then sold to Athletico (in 2010), then loaned to Braga, sold to Hercules and presently in the Brazilian Serie A with Athletico Paranaense. A terrible fall from grace for the 23 year old

JAY SIMPSON

Another player whom much was expected from. Went on loan to Millwall, WBA and QPR. Was later sold to Hull City and is presently playing in the Thailand first division with Buriram United; very painful.

Gooner of Steel has gone through this stress to tell my readers where our once wonderful young stars are presently playing and hope our current crop of youngsters don’t end like them.

This year we have some awesome young players. The creativity of Zelalem and Crawley is breathless, the strength and Maturity of Chuba Akpom is way beyond his teenage years, Toral and Bellerin add the Spanish flavour to the mix.

Image

Then you have Gnabry and Eisfield. Isaac Hayden, Kristoffer Olsson, Austin Lipman, Matt Macey are all very talented lads and with talk of Sannabria coming from Barcelona, these lads are really something.

The older young players like Ryo Miyiachi with his power and pace down the wings and Costa Rica International, Joel Campbell; who is having a great season on loan at Olympiakos ( 6 goals and 8 assist) and might have his breakthrough into the first team next season.

Image

It would be very painful if in the next 5 years, I find these hugely talented stars in the some strange leagues like Simpson in the Thai league.
