MY ARSENAL CHRISTMAS WISH

The Christmas time is a period of giving and sharing among friends and loved ones. Hampers, bottles of wine, food are the common items that are exchanged and there are smiles everywhere and is a period I always look forward to because of the gifts that I would receive ( though I am still waiting for my first gift of the year).

As a gooner through and through, inside-out and from head to toe, I also look forward to receiving gifts from my dear club as I give them my valuable gift of love, fan ship and prayer. Last year, I wished for Arsenal to finish in the top four after a poor start to the season and though it came in may the next year, it was as cherished as ever. This year, I have had a lot of options as I am allowed to make one wish. If I was allowed to make up to 10, it would have not still been enough.

Christmas has been quite a pleasure for the gooners this year. The eight days break has been a wonderful window for the players and staff to fully enjoy the yuletide fun. From the various parties to the visit to the Whittington Hospital, then the hilarious video of Santi Carzola, Tomas Rosicky, Lukas Podolski and Szczesny mimicking Santa Claus and his Elves; it has been a good Christmas this year: fun, team bonding and a perfect avenue to fully recover from the drubbing at the Etihad. However, I want more.

The Premier League this season is sure going to be the most exciting in years both at the top and bottom. While Palace, Sunderland, Fulham, West Ham, Norwich, Cardiff and co fight to stay up, Arsenal, Chelsea and the Manchester twins would be struggling to lay their hands on the title. This festive period would surely have a big say on how the title would swing.

Its on record that the last four winners of the league have been top on Christmas day while in the last 7  out of 9 seasons, the team at the top on Christmas day has gone on to win the league. Funny facts, but the when you have such high figures of accuracy, you have to take notice. So the big question is who will be the Christmas Champions of the EPL.

Four teams have the chance to get this facetious title: Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and City. The gooners are on 35 two ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool on 33 with Manchester City a further point below on 32. This weekend, Liverpool have just defeated Cardiff at Anfield; Manchester City should be able to put aside their woeful away form and defeat Fulham. That means both teams should topple Arsenal before the gooners play on Monday night.

Chelsea would need to win to get the top position while the Wenger’s men would need to win their London rivals  in order to get the tag as Christmas champions, even a draw would not be enough as Liverpool (if they win Cardiff) would have a higher goal difference to the gooners.

That brings me to the earlier point I was trying to make: my Arsenal Christmas wish. I have decided to make my choice and my Arsenal Christmas wish is: my dear Arsenal please beat Chelsea on Monday night.

The win would not just be for the gain of three points but to have some bragging rights over Arsenal’s version  of ‘noisy neighbors’. In addition, it would see Wenger get his first win over Jose Mourinho in the league and we would have some revenge over the Capital One defeat a couple of months back. In all, nothing would be sweeter than beating Chelsea two days to Christmas day; it would make my Yuletide perfect. On football terms, it would open up five points between us and the Blues; and with Liverpool squaring up against City and Chelsea before the end of the year, we could even go further up the table entering into the New Year; so you can see why I chose this particular wish.

Can Arsenal beat the Chelsea? Definitely yes. Chelsea has had a topsy-turvy season and Mourinho has had a fairly rough time with his squad. From the benching of Mata, to his ordeal with De Bryune, then Eden Hazard and just recently his public criticism of his strikers. In truth, Chelsea have seemed like a team without bite, they tend to dominate play and are always a threat going forward, but have failed to kill off games. Also, Mourinho has tossed his squad a lot especially in midfield and attack.

The last time Arsenal beat the blues in the league was the Van Persie led 3-5 win at Stamford bridge and I see it happening again on Monday night. It would be the sweetest Christmas gift I have gotten in a while. #myarsenalchristmaswish #COYG
