WENGER’S JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW PHOBIA

9 out of 10 gooners would be expecting Wenger to make big signings in the January transfer window. Many sports websites have brought out name after name, permutations on why that player would swap his club for the gooners. Many fans are expectant and waiting patiently for the January transfer window to come, so that they could see quality additions to the squad.

Obviously, there is need for one or two additions in the squad, especially a center forward and a center back. Giroud has been the only one given the responsibility of carrying the attack, even though he has not done too badly, there is still massive room for improvement. Over the last month, he has failed to score and even though he is one player I love due to his commitment, you can’t give what you don’t have. Another center back is a second priority, maybe not as quality as Mertesacker or Koscienly, but someone with huge potential and an adequate cover for the team. The big question is would wenger overcome his dislike or phobia for the winter transfer window?

It is always difficult in the middle of the season. If somebody is doing well somewhere the clubs do not necessarily want to sell him. They can wait until the end of the season. Most of the time it [the reason we don’t buy] is because we didn’t find the right player.-ARSENE WENGER

JERMAINE PENNANT

Spent 6 years at the club, came to the club at the age of 15 for 2 million pounds. Made his debut at agae 16 in 1999. Made just 12 league appearances and scored 3 ( the hatrick against Southampton in 2003). Had a lot of character issues, missed training a lot and always complained of being homesick. Finally left the club in 2005.

NWANKWO KANU

A true gooner, made 119 league appearances, scoring 48 goals. Would be famously remembered for his hatrick against Chelsea in 1999. In 2008, was voted the 13th in the ‘Gunner’ greatest 50 players poll.

KABA DIAWARA

French born Guinean striker, bought in 1999, made 12 league appearances, scoring no goal; left the club that summer.

GUILLAUME WARMUZ

Switzerland keeper, was brought in as a cover for existing keepers. Made no appearance and went off in the summer.

JOSE ANTONIO REYES.

Bought for a then record fee of 10.5 million pounds in 2004, played 69 league games for the club scrong 16 goals. Was loved by many gooners for his guile and dribbling ability; was touted for great things in the club especially with the impending retirement of Bergkamp, but failed to deliver, shipped out on loan to Real Madrid in 2007.

EMMANUEL EBOUE

Bought in January, 2005. Made 132 appearances, scoring 10 goals. Had a terrible start to his time in Arsenal, lacked confidence and was even booed by the fans at some point, but came back strong and did very well. Sold to Galatasaray.

EMMAUEL ADEBAYOR

Togolese striker that was called ‘baby Kanu’ at the club. Was bought in January 2006 for 3 million Pounds. Played 104 league games for Arsenal, scoring 46 goals. Left the club after some years and is very despised by the gooner faithful.

MART POOM

Made just one league appearance in the last game of the 2006-07 season against Portsmouth.

ANDREI ARSHAVIN

The Russian Assassin was tipped to be a huge success at Arsenal, especially after the gooners had battled with other big clubs for his signature. Came in and was an instant hit. Scored that super goals against Blackburn, then the four-goal show at Anfield. We all were anticipating his first full season, but that was all he had to give us. Came to the club for a then record fee, played 105 league games, scoring 23 goals.

SOL CAMPBELL

Wenger broke his rule to bring back Sol, especially after he left the club in acrimonious circumstances in the first place. Made 11 league appearances with no goals, but scored in the Champions League against Porto.

It is clear to see that Wenger has really never got it right in the January transfer window and if he has a phobia, it is understood.

He however has to get it right in this upcoming window as it could decide if we would break our lack of trophy spell. I believe the Boss understands the need to bring in someone new especially after he has seen the impact that Ozil had on the club. My only fear is that we might not get the marquee signing we are craving for, instead we might see a talent that has huge potential, but not disrupt the dynamism of the squad and would be in between the quality of Bendtner and Giroud.

In all, let us trust the Boss with whatever he decides to do. #Wengerknows #COYG
