Ever since the end of the Invincible Era, there has been a conscious effort to get like for like replacements for the various key members of that awesome squad.
Wenger and his team of Scouts have brought in various players that have been considered as heir to the throne of various players.
Diaby has been compared many times to Patrick Vieira and Pogba has been mentioned many times. Ramsey has been compared to Fabregas, the Mertesacker-Koscienly partnership reminds a lot of people about Bould-Adams or Campbell- Toure. Theo Walcott has the same movements and finesse as Henry. Wenger has compared Ozil to Pires and the backroom staff at the club have a lot of times mentioned at Ozil’s arrival would have the same effect as the arrival of Bergkamp to the club in 1995. However, there is one player that we seem to have forgotten, Freddie Ljungberg.
Nobody has been touted as his replacement, maybe because his qualities are very hard to find or there is no conscious effort to find that player; there is one player that reminds so much of the talented Swede, 22 year old Antoine Greizmann.
From the first time, I watched Antoine in the U-20 world cup in Colombia 2011; I knew he was made for greatness. He has something that is not very perculiar with most wingers, the ability to be fast, good dribbler, fleet footed and at the same time, technically gifted. He was one of the stars of the Real Sociedad side that finished 4th last season and is one of the leading lights of that very young and impressive side.
Here are some of his stats so far this season as provided by whoscored.com
1. 15 appearances 12 goals
2. Has made 1.2 key passes per game and has 2 assist
3. Has 3.4 shots per game and has made 0.9 successful dribbles per game.
4. Has made 29.1 successful passes per game with a pass completion rate of 78.3%
5. He has made 0.8 successful crosses per game, 0.6 long balls per game and 0.1 through balls per game.
6. For a winger, he is also mightful of his defensive duties, he has made an impressive 2.2 tackles per game, 0.9 interceptions per game and for a player of less than 6 ft, he has won 1.4 aerial duels per game and also scored a lot of goals with his head.
Antoine is one of the stars of the Spanish La Liga and it won’t be long before a big club snatches him away from the Basque outfit. His star is surely increasing by the day and he has even been compared with sensational French and Bayern player, frank Ribery.
A deal in this transfer window is almost impossible but Wenger must pursue a deal in the summer. I am of the view that this Arsenal team is something special and that we might just have another Invincible era in our hands. With Ozil, Ramsey, Wilshere, Gibbs, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain all on or below 25 years, this team would only get stronger and better. The addition of Greizmann would only make them stronger.
His presence would provide a stronger presence down the flanks. Arsene has never hidden the fact that he sees Oxlade-Chamberlain as a central midfielder in the long term and thus Greizmann would be welcomed in the team and at the age of 22, the super Frenchman would only get better.
We must pursue a deal for him in the summer because if we don’t another big club would get him and then he could be a thorn in our flesh. #COYG
