SLOWLY……SLOWLY…..SURELY?

There is no doubt that the league is a marathon and you cannot actually decide who wins the league at the beginning. However, the truth is that this famous marathon is made up of 38 parts and the more you win each of these parts gets you closer to the finish line. For the last couple of seasons, the gooners have been embroiled in the battle for fourth mostly with neighbors and rivals, Tottenham; this season, however, we have been top of the league for a while and the popular chant ‘we are top of the league’ has become common in the Emirates.

Nobody gave the gooners any chance, but we have shocked everybody. Even now, that Arsene and his wards are top of the league with 51 points from 22 games; some pundits still don’t believe that the gooners can actually do it. It is almost a shock to them that Arsenal are top of the league and have a great chance to win it after a while of not competing; what they don’t realize is that with every win and three points gained, slowly and slowly, we are getting there.

THE DYNAMISM OF THE TEAM

This team has something that not peculiar with many teams and with previous squads. Ozil might be the most expensive player in the squad, but he is certainly not the only player that the fans look to when the going gets tough. Wilshere was awesome against Villa; Carzola was great against Fulham, Giroud against Newcastle, Walcott at Upton Park, Gnabry against Tottenham. There is always somebody to step up and be counted, it is not like past seasons when we always pray a certain player did not get injured and when you put into consideration that our best player so far, Aaron Ramsey has not played since Boxing Day, it makes you know how great and superb this team is, surely a title winning team.

THE RETURNING PLAYERS

There has been a mini holiday for players that were instrumental in the early season form. Ramsey has not played for a while and if he makes return in FA Cup game, that would be over 4 weeks of rest albeit through injury. The super Welshman would surely come back stronger and better. Giroud has also had a mini break, Ozil missed the festive season games, Podolski is getting back to optimum level, The OX is back, Bendtner is not far away, Gibbs has not started in the last four games, Sanogo is getting back and would be a good back up, Carzola seems to be back to his best and with Wenger confirming that they are looking into potential possibilities for a striker in January, the team is surely bubbling with players that are fresh and rearing to go. Another sign of a title winning team.

TOUGH MARCH

Arsenal traditionally has tough months, periods when everything seems to come down crumbling on us and when nothing seems to go right. This team has passed those months with ease and has come out still top of the table. Traditionally, November is always hard, we were not put down, the hectic festive season is most times a banana peel for us, we did not fall, and then we have March. Most of the past seasons, where Arsenal has contested for the league, we have given up those challenges in this particular month. Looking at the fixtures in February and March, it won’t be an easy period again.

FEB. 8             LIVERPOOL (A)

FEB. 12           MANCHESTER UNITED (H)

FEB. 19           BAYERN MUNICH (H)

FEB. 22           SUNDERLAND (H)

MARCH 1       STOKE CITY (A)

MARCH 8       SWANSEA (H)

MARCH 11     BAYERN (A)

MARCH 15     TOTTENHAM (A)

MARCH 22     CHELSEA (A)

MARCH 29     MAN CITY (H)

These are certainly not easy games and would determine how successful our season. Playing these big games back to back would not be easy and it would surely test the resolve of these players but if there one attribute particular about this team is their strength in character and determination. Gooner of Steel believes we would come out victorious in this period.

THE CONTENDERS

At the beginning of the season, it was like it was going to be a 4 to 5 man race, but it is becoming a 3 man race, with Manchester City and Chelsea joining the gooners.

Manchester City seem to be everyone favorite and it seems logical, they arguably have the best team in the league and are scoring goals for fun, have averaged almost three goals per game in the league and have scored over 103 in all competitions. They are surely looking good and have seemed to correct their away form. However, they could have it tough in the remaining 16 games. Firstly, their quest for a quadruple could distract them especially as they might want to do very well in the Champions League. Secondly, they are going to make tough away trips, they go the Emirates, Anfield, White Hart Lane, Old Trafford and welcome Chelsea ( which would be as hard as an away game).

Chelsea are another, Mourinho has conducted his affairs well and seems to have calculated how his season would go. Bar Eto’o hatrick against United, they have a not too strong strike force and that could prove crucially bad for them.

This season is delivering all its promises and the next 16 games would not fail to deliver; but the more Arsenal rake the points and remain top of the league, Michael Owen and co have to acknowledge the credentials of this great Arsenal team. #COYG
