Alexis Sanchez and Co reached the final of the Copa America 2015 with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Peru. This edition of the Copa America has been one for the so called ‘second grade of South America football’ with Peru and Paraguay punching above their weight.
Peru did not get to the best if starts as they were reduced to 10 men, with defender Zambrano shown a straight red for a acrobatic knee to the back of his opponent. Chile made the advantage count as once Eduardo Vargas scored in the 40th minute.
Peru pegged back the host in the 60th minute with a Gary Medel own goal. That was not to last though as Vargas once aagin responded with a nice shot on 64 minutes. Wild scenes of celebration were seen in the Stadium as Chile has the chance to win their first Copa America ever.
One point that has to be noted is the poor performance of the stars of South America. Neymar has been suspended, Messi has not really lit up the tournament, Aguero, Di Maria and Higuian seem the same; James Rogriguez has not replicated his world cup form ( did I hear someone mention Falcao has not performed). Instead, we have stars like Jorge Valdivia of Chile, Guerrero of Peru, Vidal and co running the show.
Our very own, Alexis has not been awesome and has a poor game yesterday registering just one shot. He has scores just one goal and you can’t help but wonder that the European season has taken its toll on these guys.
In other news, the story of Vidal to Arsenal has been labelled as rubbish and false. This deal had all the wrong boxes ticked for it. First, why would Juventus sell Pogba for £80 million and sell Vidal, one of their best for a mere £21 million. Secondly, Vidal is similar to Ramsey, Wilshere, Rosicky and is not a player that would sit in front of defence like Le Coq, so why get him?
The Standard has reported that Wenger did not Pursue the Schneiderlin deal because he prefers William Carvalho and is preparing a bid. The Tough tackling Portuguese is surely going to leave Sporting one day, may be this is the time. He has had a stellar U-21 euros with Portugal. He is young (23 years), can play as a holding midfielder and a defender and he is very physical. Would provide a nice competition for Coquelin and can develop into a world class player. Not a bad addition. But would Wenger go all out to get him?
